The liver has a wide range of functions including detoxification of various metabolites, Protein synthesis and the production of biochemicals necessary for digestion.
The liver damage whenever it starts presenting as symptoms by that time the damage is far too advanced and in many of the cases it is advanced to an extent wherein repair is not possible.
The Common causes of Liver damage or failure are :
In a live donor liver transplant, A portion of the liver is surgically removed from a live donor and transplanted into a recipient immediately after the recipients liver has been entirely removed. Live donor transplantation is possible because the liver unlike any other in the body has the ability to regenerate or grow.
To begin the procedure we need to remove the diseased native liver so we divide the blood supply and the bile duct. We first divide the right and left a branch of the hepatic artery. The common hepatic and cystic ducts are divided. The Portal vein is divided. Then a clamp is applied to the inferior vena cava or IBC(Intrahepatic biliary cysts) below the liver. Another clamp is applied to IVC (inferior vena cava) above the lips. The Hepatic veins are divided. The IBC is divided below the liver. Then the diseased liver is removed.
In Preparation for the vascularization of the new liver, the openings of the Hepatic veins and the Vena cave are made into the common channel. This maximizes the outflow of the new liver blood flow. Then the doctors create a common opening for the hepatic artery. A Whole organ transplant is when the entire liver from a deceased donor is used for transplantation. It starts by connecting the top of the donor IVC to patient’s IBC. Then the IBC below the liver is connected to the patient’s IVC. Next, the portal vein is connected. The clamps are removed and blood in and out of the liver is restored. Hepatic artery is connected lastly. We connect the bile duct.
It is common to be in the hospital for several weeks after the operation
Generally, people who have undergone any Transplant surgery are able to go home after 1-2 days from the surgery. Recovery may take weeks. You most likely can get back to light activity after 3 weeks.
